Noah:
There are many Noah type legends using similar foundations: Christian/Jews have 2 accounts that differ on the same Noah [one is the Moses' account & the other is from the Book of Enoch]; the Chinese had Fa-he; the Mexican had one man, his wife & their children; - the Greeks had Deucalion; the Hindu had Manu; the Polynesians had eight escaping the flood; the early American Indians had one, three & eight saved on a boat; Greenland has the earth's axis tilting & all drowning except two
Wood is not the best material for shipbuilding.
The longest wooden ships today are about 300 feet, reinforced with iron straps.
The ark was about 450 feet long [Gen. 6:15].
There are so many issues involved that the ark should have been many times larger than a modern day cruise ship
There are more animals on that wooden ship than in any modern day zoo: one might wonder why God would instruct Noah to have an equal amount of males & females: what farmer or rancher in his right mind would keep so many territorial battling males, 7 bulls, 7 roosters & a host of other dominating males, confined to one dwelling - these combating males could destroy a battleship
- Genesis 6: 19 & 20 first states two of every thing: of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the arc, to keep them alive ... of the fowls after their kind, & of cattle after their kind, & of every creeping thing in the earth after his kind, two of every sort But the numbers change in Genesis 7:2 of every clean beast, thou shalt take to thee by sevens, the male & his female, & of beasts that are not clean, by two, the male & his female
Some, like sloth & penguins, can't travel overland very well, but Noah must have gotten them also, all the while, building that ark - a lot of world traveling towards both the North & South poles had to have taken place before the flood - then there is returning them to their natural inhabitant
& Noah builded an altar unto the LORD; & took of every clean beast, & of every clean fowl, & offered burnt offerings on the altar. cuts the animal population by 1/4
They are not on that ark for 40 days & nights of God's angry rain, but a year & ten days - Gen.7: 11, Noah's 600th year, 17th day of the 2nd month, to Gen.8: 13 & 14, Noah's 601st year, the 27th day of the second month; thus the animals would have been in very poor shape once they landed, unless they got regular exercise - how were the unfathomable thousands of animals exercised regularly by 8 people;
& of course there is the food problem; the amount of non-spoilable food would be enormous - not just for the voyage of all these occupants, but for a very long time after landing the ark as well. Non-perishable sheep burgers for the Noah family alone, 3 times a day, would amount to well over 9,000 for that trip. A massive amount of fresh water is needed, not just for all the inhabitants, but also for a great many animals which must live in fresh water [like hippos] whose water living quarters must also be maintained/filtered
the deer family & such grazers would have a long wait for the grass family to grow after the flood [a lot of seed & plant life had to be upon that ark]; & there is the problem of growing vegetation, trees, & other plant like products 150 days after the flood - 5 months - Gen.7:24 "the waters prevailed upon the earth an hundred & fifty days." - 8:3 "the waters returned from off the earth continually: & after the end of the one hundred & fifty days the waters were abated. - thus the cat family would have to catnap for many years for 1 year's worth of nourishment from deer & other prey;
then there are the creepers, who also have to eat; [but only brought in as two's of each kind]
- some, like koalas & many insects, require a special diet; koalas require fresh eucalyptus leaves, & silkworms eat nothing but fresh mulberry leaves, which means a lot more than one species of each plant must be stored for each animal/insect. For the many thousands of plant species there is at least one animal or insect that eats only that one kind of plant; [where to grow & control the plant life which also needs sunlight & water as well]
- parasitoid wasps only attack living prey; most herbivorous insects require fresh food, requiring much more than just 2 of the creepers.
- some cave-dwelling arthropods can't survive in less than 100% relative humidity
- then there are the carnivores which need small mammals, insects, fish, or aquatic invertebrates. Again, more than the 2's of the creepers & other prey
- snakes will eat only live foods - again more than the two's, or seven's
The ark would need to be well ventilated to disperse the heat, humidity, & the waste products [the deadly methane, carbon dioxide, & ammonia].
The urine & dung alone, from all the inhabitants, would take a large staff for the daily clean up [yet the port hole is not supposedly opened for 40 days & is in the upper deck of this 3 level ark, thus the waste also has to be carried upward - adding more work & time to survival duties]
Then there is the need for sun light while they are enclosed in the ark for over a year
How was fresh air circulated throughout the structure
A week = 604,800 seconds - Noah had only seven days to load the Ark [Gen. 7:4-10]. Although there must have been more than 15,900 animals boarding the ark, that number would work out to 1 animal being boarded every 38 seconds, night & day for seven straight days - no sleep.
Some must get a laugh at God's humor in this saga:
1st there are just 3 sons with their 3 spouses, plus Noah & his spouse, upon ark - Genesis 7:7&13: in the selfsame day entered Noah, & Shem, & Ham, & Japheth, the sons of Noah, & Noah's wife, & the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark
Gen.6: 10 - Noah begat three sons, Shem, Ham, & Japheth - not 4 sons & no mention of another son's wife
After the flood, the unforeseen Eber's wife (the region beyond) shows up - the dead son's wife - Genesis 10:21 unto Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the brother of Japheth the elder, even to him were children born - why say the brother of Japheth - why not the other son. ARE SHEM & JAPHETH BROTHERS? ACCORDING TO SCRIPTURE, THE LAW IS FOR THE ELDEST BROTHER, JAPHETH, TO BREED THE WIDOWED SISTER, & DEFINITELY NOT THE YOUNGER BROTHER.
Shem impregnates Eber's spouse (who never was on the arc to carry out the lineage - 2 years after the flood - Gen.10: 25 - & unto Eber were born two sons
- if this is a parable, then this indicates that something thought to be dead is now revived
Why was Eber's birth never recorded & yet mentioned later
What unspeakable physical act did Noah's son, Ham, do to Noah. This very immoral act far exceeds that of Lot's incestuous acts - so horrific - that it cannot be documented by the Biblical scribes. Noah was too intoxicated to stop Ham from performing this act, but not too inebriated to remember to curse Ham & all of his generations afterwards
